This 6-week mindfulness class will focus on cultivating four qualities essential to fostering our resilience and heartfulness in the world: kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. In prior classes or retreats on mindfulness, you probably experienced meditations on loving kindness and/or compassion. In this course we will deepen our experience with kindness and compassion, as well cultivating joy and equanimity. These four qualities are sometimes called the Immeasurable, the Inimitable, the Divine Abode, or the Brahmavijaras (in Theravadan Buddhism). Nurturing these qualities helps us live in the world more fearlessly, be a true friend to ourselves and others, and cultivate an inner stance that is a steady refuge in the confusion, suffering, and alienation of this everyday world. We are encouraged to make these qualities the home of our heart, available to us at any moment.
The class will focus on cultivating these four qualities in our hearts/minds with a wide range of practice strategies, focusing on the body, the mind, and the emotions. We’ll do this with short talks, guided meditations, group discussions, daily home practice, handouts, and recordings of guided meditations. As these practices are based in mindfulness, prior mindfulness experience is recommended.
Schedule: Saturdays, 2:00–4:00, February 1 through March 8, 2025.
Teacher: Libby Robinson, Ph.D., MSW, experienced mindfulness teacher with extensive personal practice and retreat experiences in insight meditation (i.e., mindfulness) and the Brahmavijaras.
